Reasons you should take a MSF course

There are many reasons for taking the MSF BasicRider Course. This article will outline some of the more important ones. I’ll also highlight some of the reasons why some do not take the course. Always take into account the advice of others, but remember that the path you choose is up to you. Now, onto the reasons.

Improve Your Skills and Confidence
The Basic RiderCourse is aimed at a wide spectrum of riders. From riders who have no experience to those with a lot, everyone will benefit from the course. Not everyone can get on a bike for the first time and be able to ride. The MSF course will have trained professionals who will guide you along in your learning process. In showing you how to operate a motorcycle safely, you’ll be more confident in your riding abilities. Those who have learned on their own will more than likely have developed some bad riding habits. MSF course instructors will point these out to you to improve your riding. Not only that, you’ll be safer on the road with proper knowledge.

Skills Test Waiver
Completing the course will give you a Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training (Form DL 389). This will allow you to go to the DMV and get a M license without having to take the skills test, but you will still be required to take the motorcycle permit test. Many who have taken the DMV skills test say that the test is ridiculously hard, even to those with years of riding experience. Not only that, the skills test has no real-world application. It should be noted that, unlike California, some states do not accept the MSF course as equivalent. You’ll need to check with your state’s DMV. Also, by taking the course, you won’t need to purchase or rent a motorcycle for the DMV skills test. The MSF course will provide the motorcycle and helmet during the on-motorcycle training.

Insurance Discount
Many insurance companies will offer a discount once you complete the course. Some have saved more than the cost of the course. You’ll have to check with your insurance company.

Course locations can be found at the MSF website here.

There are reasons why some choose not to take the course.

Cost
The cost of the course is not cheap. In California, the MSF course costs $250 for those 21 years and over. Those under 21 years of age do get a discount at $150. They receive a discount because California forces those under 21 to take the MSF course.

Course Structure
Some complain about the riding portion of the course. A typical class has 12 riders and 2 instructors. You’ll spend much time waiting for your turn. You’ll also not gain any real street riding experience in the course as most exercises are low speed in an open parking lot.

Personally, I chose to take the MSF course mainly because of the difficulty of the DMV skills test. Also, I’ve learned to ride mostly on my own, with guidance and tips from Alex. I’m sure I’ve developed bad riding habits that I need to get corrected.

The next article in this series will detail what my MSF course was like, starting with the classroom session. To read, click here.
