Z Real Deal…

Just figured I should show you guys my actual new bike rather than just some web pic. Had a couple hiccups in the first week I owned it (delivered with dead battery) but other than that I’ve been just having a lot of fun with it!

So when I got the bike, and discovered it had a dead battery, I knew I was going to have to jump start it. I have heard its easier to jump start it in 2nd gear rather than in 1st, but for some reason it wouldn’t kick into second. Alex and I had one hell of a time getting it jump started in first but after about a half hour we finally got it going. When I called the place I bought it from, they actually were surprised we even got it jump started in first gear, but I explained the problem above, and provided an interesting answer.

Now this is not coming from Kawasaki, but from a mechanic who knows bikes. Apparently Kawasaki has a safety feature on its smaller bikes that does not let you shift into second until you are rolling at about 5-10 mph; it apparently has to do with another feature that makes it easy to find neutral. I know a lot of random facts most will never have to know, but I found this one particularly interesting. What do you guys think?

Everyone has told me not to follow the break in procedure set forth in the factory manual. I tend to agree. Here is why. Before a motorcycle leaves a manufacturing plant, it is always fired up and tested. So when a manufacturer first fires-up a new engine on a test stand, they know from experience that the piston rings will seal properly before the engine even leaves the factory. Every Ducati is run-in for ten minutes or more on the dyno using a prescribed rpm and temperature sequence.
