Learning to Ride a Motorcycle – Day 3written by -- December 30th, 2007Filed under: 2008 Triumph Street Triple,Staff Bikes | Comments (0) |
Great learning day for me. Alex rode with me on his Speed Triple to a parking lot. I had plenty of room to try shifting without having to worry about anything else. I finally hit 2nd gear! I even made it to 3rd! I think I even hit 35mph. The lot is a magnet for new drivers though and I had a car drive in front of my path…Luckily I was able to avoid them by using both the rear and front brakes for a relatively smooth stop. After a few passes across the lot, I tried down shifting with success.
Check out the sexy triples after a fun ride!

After the ride in the lot, it was time to head home. It was my first time riding in traffic. Good thing Alex rode behind me to protect me from the cars. It was exciting and scary at the same time. I was able to control the throttle much better, even with the winter gloves on. My shifting was a little jerky, but I made it back with no trouble. Big thing, no drops or mishaps! The only problem I had was that my body was all sore from being tensed up. My right hand was sore and was stuck in a claw position. I need to learn how to relax when riding!
Lessons Learned:
- Improved throttle control
- Shifting to 2nd and 3rd gear
- Downshifting
Goals for next lesson:
- Smoother shifting
- Turning
